No-Nonsense Tools & Advice for Leaders of

Lessons from the Obamas in Singapore

In December, I flew to Singapore, to hear President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama speak, on two different days, at an event organized by a friend of mine. I had an amazing time and had the opportunity to meet these two very down-to-earth people who have accomplished so much in their lives, and who dedicate themselves to making a positive impact on the world. I was struck by how transparent they both were about their misgivings and their accomplishments. And they both agreed that the people around them made all the difference.

One of the most striking things was how President Obama talked about how much he had relied on, and missed, the great team he had built in the White House. He told one story of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico – how, for months, oil poured into the ocean and no-one seemed to be able to stop it. He called it “the worst environmental disaster in American history.”

Finally, one of his key advisors, with expertise in that area, came to him with a solution. Although President Obama wasn’t an expert in this area, the advisor was so passionate and convinced it would work, they shared it with others and agreed to try it. Thankfully, it worked.

It goes to show that - whether you run a company or a country - there’s no way you can know enough about everything to solve every problem that arises. Which is why you need triangles. Read on to see what I mean.

Circles & Triangles: Confusing "Well-Rounded" with "Strength"

I was thinking about circles and triangles and how, in our society, many people believe we should all be well-rounded circles. In fact, we talk about how being ‘well-rounded’ as a better thing to be – a well-rounded athlete, for example – but is it?

But the truth is, many people are not well-rounded: they’re more like a triangle, with skills and attributes that are strong and sharp.  And, from my perspective, when we try to take a strong triangle, and make it into a circle, we weaken it.
