Catastrophe and the Pain of Losing an Amazing Team Member
Lots of things
can disappoint, hurt and cost us when building a great company: losing a key customer, mistakes that need costly rework, hiring someone who turns out to be less than competent or is toxic in the culture.
When I look back over the last year and beyond, the most painful and gut-wrenching for me is when highly talented people say, "Sorry, this opportunity is not good for me, anymore", and leave the company.
Despite spending incredible time, strategy and effort to find, recruit and build high-performing leaders it can happen and yes, you can learn and do better next time, but I think it’s one of the biggest failures of a leader.
In companies we work with, we would often lose some
money rather than a highly talented leader or team member.
