No-Nonsense Tools & Advice for Leaders of

The Long Haul to Cut it Short

In November, I delivered presentations in Whistler, BC and in Las Vegas, Nevada about the principles in my book. The goal for both was to deliver value to my audiences – the difference was in how long I had to do it.

In Whistler, I had a full day to deliver a keynote and facilitate a workshop to really dig into the principles. In Las Vegas, I had 20 minutes. And it was quite the experience to go from one extreme to the other, within two days.

What I’ve learned is that, the shorter the session, the longer the preparation. I could share and facilitate for three days straight on these principles in my book, and we have also developed an in-depth, 17-session Leadership Training Program for company teams. But to prepare for the 20-minute presentation was a lot more challenging.

The exercise reminded me of an Oscar Wilde quote:

"Not that the story need be long, but it will take a long while to make it short."

Being succinct takes a ton of work – whether a letter, an email or a talk – because the scarcity of time challenges you to get clear on your messages and outcomes, and really forces you to prioritize what must be said or communicated versus what you’d like to. And it’s worth it in order to accomplish what you want to say, and to deliver value for your audience.

The Challenge
  • In your communications – meetings, correspondence, presentations - where do you have unnecessary complexity?
  • What can you do in 20 minutes that you usually do in an hour, or four, or a day?
